Everyone wants to be healthy, but few choose to be healthy. The choice is yours, and it begins with the decisions you make, such as what type of food you buy and keep in your house.
We head to the grocery store with the best of intentions, but often get lured off the list by the new flavor of ice cream that caught your eye en route to the fish counter.
Stick to these simple rules when grocery shopping to make healthier choices:

  1. Eat before you go – NEVER grocery shop when you’re hungry. This leads to impulse purchases (typically unhealthy foods) and a larger grocery bill.
  1. Shop the perimeter – This means stocking up on fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy products.
  1. Buy in season – Fruits and vegetables in season have more flavor and nutrients because they’ve had the chance to fully ripen before they’re picked. These foods are also cheaper because they don’t require as much effort to produce.
  1. What you buy is what you’ll eat – If you don’t purchase unhealthy foods, you won’t be tempted to eat them at home. Make a grocery list before shopping and stick to it to avoid temptations!

If you want to eat healthy but don’t have the time or patience for the grocery store, many stores now offer local grocery delivery, or Amazon Fresh is a good option if available in your area. That way you get just what is on your list and avoid the temptations while shopping the aisles.
