29 Dec Goal Setting 2017 Style
The first week of January is one of my favorite times of the year. It is critical for me both professionally and personally. I always go away for a few days. Unplug, hit pause, reset. A few questions always come to mind: Am I am happy in the present? If not, what needs to change? Where do I see myself three years from now? Does my life reflect my core values?
There are a lot of goal planning books out there and if you have one you like stick with it. My favorite is a book called “Your Best Year Yet!” It is simple, straightforward, and can be knocked out over a long weekend. Essentially, it helps you set ten goals based on your core values. For example, seeing my family at least twice a year is important to me. That is always a goal. Last year filming enough TMAC 20 Workout Videos to have a monthly subscription was a goal. CHECK! Areas I have struggled? A more balanced personal life. So setting “my toes in the sand” once a week is a goal!
Each year this goal setting process reminds me of my wins and losses. It can be a bit painful and raw, but after five years of doing this I honestly look forward to it. It is interesting to reflect back on relationships, goals, dreams, and see how they have evolved over the years.
So what’s your plan? Some smart fella named Ben Franklin once said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!”
